As you know a typical court reporter utilizes various machines such as a computer, stenotype and certainly stenomask. All of this is very helpful in day-to-day court proceedings. This court reporting program normally includes training in basic English skills, medical and legal terminology and so on. During the course of this useful program anybody will be aware of courtroom as well as deposition procedures. You can also learn closed captioning, real-time reporting, computer aided transcription and certainly word processing. As usual it takes up to 33 months to complete the entire course.
A stenomask is one of numerous machines a court reporter uses in his daily dealings. I can define it as a special mask covering the whole mouth of a speaker. It has got a built-in microphone. This stenomask gives a court reporter an opportunity to speak. As you might have guessed he won’t be heard by other people. It also muffles the whole background noise in the court.
The stenomask was invented by Horace Webb and his two colleagues in 1940. That guy was concerned with creating a fast and accurate system of transcription. He realized that shorthand notes couldn’t follow fast talkers. Difficult terminology did things worse too. Besides this at that time shorthand reporters had to dictate transcription notes into special typewritten forms. As the result two hours of dictation corresponded to every hour of transcription. By the way the prototype of the first stenomask was a rubber Air Force face mask with a coffee pot. This pot was filled with a special sound absorbing material. The US Navy considered the product to be the most precise method of transcription among all known ones. So it was adopted specially for court reporting.
By the way the use of a stenomask is prohibited in a half of the US states. Now we can use new versions of the stenomask. They are light and easy to use. They have an original moose-mask design. I should say that this method of court reporting usually known as voice writing was previously called the stenomask system.
Voice reporters are able to make a record of the court proceedings with the help of a stenomask with a special voice silencer as well as analog tapes. Voice writers normally repeat every word pronounced by attorneys, judges, witnesses and other parties in a proceeding. They can also identify any speaker verbally. Of course the text is thoroughly punctuated in this case. All the activities are described as they happen and in some cases even exhibits are marked. Now we can transform spoken words into rather a readable text using specialized hardware and software. It makes our everyday job in court reporting more convenient and productive. Of course court reporters of the past could only dream about this miracle.
