If the work piece has been put under extreme heat or when maximum corrosion resistance is required, it may be necessary to passivate or pickle and passivate. Passivation is a process that is needed to make a surface passive, in other words a surface film is made that causes the surface to lose its chemical reactivity. Pickle and passivate is a two step process used to create a surface that is immune to corrosion. Pickling is a form of chemical descaling done to remove scale and the passivation is done to make the surface more passive and corrosion resistant.
